A Scholarship That Helps Turn Ambition Into Opportunity

For many young people, pursuing an education begins with a strong support system. For others, it begins with determination, a difficult decision, and the courage to build a path forward.

The Greater Toronto Apartment Association’s scholarship program was created to represent the owners and property managers of more than 150,000 units in purpose-built rental buildings across the GTA, supporting residents as they begin post-secondary education or career training. Each year, the program recognizes young residents who are demonstrating academic commitment, community involvement, employment experience, volunteerism, and financial need. In 2026, four recipients were selected to receive scholarships to help cover tuition costs.

This year, one of those recipients is Mahan S., a resident of a Lawrence Construction Co. Limited community.

Mahan’s Journey

At 15 years old, Mahan moved to Toronto alone. Without an established support network, they faced the challenge of building a new life while managing school, work, and the responsibilities that came with starting over in a new city.

Over the past six years, they have continued moving forward with determination. Alongside their studies and employment, Mahan has participated in community activities and contributed to the community around him.

Their ambition to become a firefighter was further strengthened by a captain who lives in the same building. Through conversations, advice, and encouragement, the captain helped Mahan learn more about the profession and inspired them to pursue a career focused on service and helping others. Mahan is now preparing to continue their education and take the next step toward becoming a firefighter.

Recognizing Potential

Mahan’s selection reflects more than their educational goals. It recognizes the perseverance, community involvement, and sense of purpose they have demonstrated throughout their journey.

The scholarship will provide meaningful support as Mahan continues their studies and works toward a career dedicated to serving others. For Lawrence Construction, Mahan's story is also a reminder of the important role communities can play in people’s lives. A building can be more than a place to live—it can be a place where relationships develop, mentorship begins, and residents find the encouragement to pursue their goals.
